Aztec Foulsham Caramel Reticulated Pythons

Breeding projects Aztec Foulsham Caramel
Since 2015, we have been breeding Foulsham Caramel Reticulated Pythons.
The Aztec gene, a recent addition to the market, was introduced from the wild (Borneo) in 2014. The Aztec gene has found success in Europe and America, and it is now entering the UK.
Incorporating Aztec into our breeding project has been a great way to advance our Foulsham caramel project after working with Marble and Foulsham caramel in 2023.
Aztec, like Marble, maintains the base color of a Classic Reticulated Python but transforms the pattern into stripes, yellow flecks, and eliminates the standard saddle pattern.
The process
Reticulated Pythons are one of our favourite species to breed. Due to the varying morphs that can be produced. For instance, because of the multiple genes in the Mother of the Aztec clutch, every snake in the clutch was a different morph.

Sire (Father) of our Aztec Foulsham Caramel clutch. Aztec het White Albino, het Genetic Stripe. The babies from this clutch are possible het genetic stripe, so they possess a small percentage of dwarf blood.

Dame (Mother) of our Aztec Foulsham Caramel Clutch. Coral Motley Platinum Suntiger (13ft). Coral is the visual representation of het White Albino and het Foulsham Caramel combined. These genes are allelic so only 1 copy of each gene is needed to create a Coral, the babies in the clutch are either het for Foulsham Caramel or White Albino- which can only be proven by breeding to a relevant partner.

One of our favourite non-albino babies from the clutch is the Aztec Tiger het Foulsham Caramel or White Albino, possible het Genetic Stripe. It is clear to see the Aztec pattern showing down the centre of the snake, with the thicker stripes down the side due to the Tiger gene.

Classic het Foulsham Caramel or White Albino offspring vary in lightnes dependng on what they are het for. For instance, any babies het for Genetic Stripe may have some striping in their pattern, het Foulsham babies may be more golden in colour rather than darker brown.

Aztec Coral Motley Suntiger produced in this clutch shows thicker banding, which is a characteristic associated with Foulsham Caramel. Banding on animals carrying the gene is 1-2 scales thicker than animals that do not contain the gene.

White Sunfire PH Genetic Stripe produced in this clutch. This animal holds no Foulsham Caramel as it is visually White Albino. If it did contain Foulsham Caramel, the visual representation would be a Coral. These animals show the varying morphs that can be produced when multiple genes are bred.
Caring for Reticulated Pythons
Size
One of the most common questions we are asked by almost all potential owners is “what size can I expect my reticulated python to get?”. Several factors contribute to the size of an adult reticulated python. Many keepers overfeed their reticulated pythons to make them appear larger for shock value. Overfeeding your python can lead to various health issues, with the most common one being a reduced lifespan. Like humans, overfeeding snakes can cause obesity, putting pressure on their organs. Feed your snake what it needs to survive, but avoid overfeeding.
Many keepers prefer a beautiful reticulated python that remains small as an adult. If you prefer a smaller reticulated python, our general advice is to choose a male. Males do not need as much food as they do not reproduce, so they can be naturally smaller as adults.
Knowing the parental size is likely one of the most important factors to consider when estimating the adult size of your pet snake. The sire of our Aztec clutch is around 6.5ft and the dame is 13ft, so we expect adults to grow to a similar size. To avoid overfeeding your snake, monitor and record its feeding, shedding, length, and weight. Consider this fact before purchasing: Reticulated pythons are one of the largest species of snake in the world.

Housing
Housing for an adult reticulated python is typically custom-built. This is because the sizes of vivariums available from suppliers are limited. However they are becoming more available in larger sizes than ever before.
When you purchase your reticulated python from us, it will have been regularly feeding and shedding before you take it home. To ensure this, consider some factors when selecting housing for your snake. Blackpool Reptiles provide a range of housing. They can ensure you have the right kit for your snake based on its size, age, and personality.
For example, smaller snakes that are 2-3 months old typically need a hatchling kit. Alternatively, with a vivarium kit, we suggest buying a smaller tub to use if your snake has feeding problems. When little, baby snakes are curious. They can also be sensitive to large spaces they are not accustomed to. Reducing space, adding decor, or placing your snake in a smaller tub the night before feeding can help prevent it from refusing to eat.
Larger snakes who are older will need to be placed straight into an appropriately sized vivarium.
Environment
Reticulated Pythons originate in Southern and Southeast Asia. They live in a warm and humid environment with hot sun and higher UVB than we receive in the UK.
You must provide heating and lighting for your reticulated Python to mimic the parameters they would receive in the wild. While Reticulated Pythons are mostly active and hunt at night, you should provide a low-output source of UVB to keep your snake’s skin and bones healthy and represent the day and night hours. You should provide UVB for 10-12 hours a day, depending on the time of year.
Heat sources are available in multiple forms; however, we recommend a heat bulb or ceramic for a vivarium enclosure. Heat sources must be plugged into a thermostat. Thermostats heat your enclosure to the temperature you set the thermostat to, similar to the way central heating works. Thermostats also prevent overheating and the need to turn heat sources on and off to get the correct temperature. They are energy efficient, as they only power the heat source to what is required. We recommend checking your tank with a thermometer regularly (especially during seasonal changes) to ensure the actual temperature is correct. You may need to offset your thermostat by a few degrees depending on probe placement and things like ambient temperatures.
