Aberrant Black & White Stripe Gargoyle Gecko CB21
Gargoyle geckos originate in New Caledonia, along with the popular Crested Gecko and the giant Leachie Gecko. They are a medium sized arboreal forest lizard reaching around 8 inches (snout to tail) and can live are 15-20 years with the correct care.
Gargoyle Geckos, like many lizards have the ability to dramatically change colour dependent on their mood, temperature and the time of day. Quite often you may think, ‘that’s not the same colour as when I brought it home’, but you will notice over time that your gecko changes many different colours such as it would in the wild. This gecko super power enables them to protect themselves from predators or attract mates.
Gargoyle geckos are easy to care for providing they are given the correct environment- this makes them a great starter pet. They were once a rare hard to come by animal which are now more readily available on the market. Gargoyles come in a range of stunning colours and patterns exhibiting metallic silvers, reds, yellows, grey’s and other colours. They have a large number of small scales which give them their shiny appearance and colour depth.
Gargoyle geckos can be kept alone or in lone male/several female groups. Male gargoyle geckos will fight so they should not be kept together. Adults do well in a large enclosure with plenty of space for jumping and exploring and are stunning in a display tank. Housing should be adequately sized for baby geckos to ensure they are able to find food and access temps correctly. They enjoy temperatures around 75-82 degrees Fahrenheit and do not require UVB but do need D3 in their diet which can be provided via a Calcium +D3 supplement.
Gargoyles can be handled although they do jump. Once purchased they should be left to settle in their environment for at least a week. Once feeding well handling can take place. Baby Gargoyles are more jumpy than adults so care should be taken when handling. Never grab a geckos tail, Gargoyles are able to drop their tails as a way of defense to predators. They do grow back but this can take time.
