Blue Splashback Poison Dart Frog
Poison dart frogs are named as such, as native tribes reportedly used to rub arrows on the frogs back before hunting.
Dart frogs in captivity do not have the same level of toxins that they do in the wild. Their diet in the wild is largely responsible for the level of toxin that they possess. In the wild, they would consume termites, ants, and other inverts, which eat plants containing toxins. Dart frogs in captivity do not have the same level of toxin due to their diet of fruit flies and small crickets, which are also bred captively.
Caring for your Dart Frog
Blue Splashback Poison dart frogs generally live on the forest floors of hot and humid countries. This means they require a cooler temperature than you may think. In captivity, they enjoy temperatures of 21–26 degrees Celsius. This is equivalent to 70–80 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid keeping these frogs at high temperatures for an extended period. High temperatures can lead to heat stress, which is fatal for them.
Dart frogs should be provided with low-level UVB light. It has been shown to aid in maintaining healthy skin and bones. This mimics their natural habitat in the wild, under the canopy.
Avoid using tap water to prevent skin irritation in your frog. Instead, opt for dechlorinated water by letting tap water sit uncovered for 24 to 48 hours, using chlorine-free bottled water, or utilising a water dechlorinator like repti-safe. Dart frogs can often be found sitting by the waterfall, feeding daily. LED lighting can improve the appearance of your tank and is a must in a display tank. You can also purchase terrarium fans. These fans prevent the glass in your tank from fogging up.
Dart frogs can be kept together in groups. However, this should be within the species and not with other species of dart frogs unless you have done adequate research. Ensure enough food is provided for all the frogs.
These tiny but stunning frogs should not be handled due to their very delicate skin, as the chemicals on our hands can cause harm. If you need to clean your frog tank, collect the frogs in a tub. Wear disposable gloves in case you need to handle them.
