Basilisks are medium to large-sized arboreal lizards originating in Central and South America. Green Basilisks are also known as the “jesus lizard” due to their ability to run very fast on the water surface.
Basilisks are interesting in appearance with a slender body and tail and a veil down their back and head. They have a large head that is angular in shape and a long tail. They inhabit rainforests, lowland forests, and riverbanks that are warm and wet, causing high humidity.
Basilisks require a large arboreal-style enclosure with plenty of branches and foliage for climbing and basking. It is important to provide a shallow water source for them to swim in, as well as a UVB light to support their calcium absorption and overall health. Provide plenty of live plants which aid in providing humidity as well as nautral enrichment for your pet.
Basilisks are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet consisting of insects, fruits, and vegetables. It is important to dust their food with calcium and other supplements to ensure they receive proper nutrition. Avoid feeding them large prey items that could cause digestive issues.
