The Butterfly Agama, also known as the Bell’s Butterfly Lizard, is a species of lizard native to Southeast Asia. They are known for their vibrant colors and unique butterfly-like appearance, making them a popular choice among reptile enthusiasts. In terms of care, they require a warm and humid environment with plenty of hiding spots and a varied diet consisting of insects and vegetation.
Butterfly Agamas should be housed in a spacious enclosure with plenty of branches and plants for climbing and hiding. It is important to provide a UVB light source and maintain proper humidity levels to ensure their health and well-being. Desert style arid substrate should be used, this can be mixed with bark or forest bio substrate to provide a similar habitat to the wild.
Butterfly Agamas thrive in temperatures ranging from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and a slight drop to 70 to 75 degrees at night. It is essential to provide a basking spot with temperatures reaching 95-100 degrees for proper digestion and thermoregulation.
To maintain a humidity level of around 30-50% for Butterfly Agamas, use a hygrometer to monitor levels regularly and mist the enclosure lightly once or twice a day, depending on the humidity requirements of the species. Ensuring access to a shallow water dish for hydration and misting the enclosure can help Butterfly Agamas maintain proper hydration levels. The water dish should be cleaned regularly to prevent bacterial growth and contamination.
Butterfly Agamas are insectivores and should be fed a diet consisting of appropriately sized insects such as crickets, mealworms, and roaches. Insects should be gut-loaded with nutritious foods before feeding. Feed adult Butterfly Agamas fresh vegetables daily and live insects every other day to maintain a balanced diet. It is important to dust their food with calcium and vitamin supplements to ensure they are receiving proper nutrition. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, so it is recommended to feed them fresh veg daily and live food every other day when they are an adult.
