Female Red Ackie Monitor CB22
Varanus acanthurus, also known as the Ackie monitor, is a small species of monitor lizard native to Australia. They are known for their vibrant coloration, intelligence, and relatively docile nature compared to other monitor species. It is important to provide them with a proper diet, ample space to roam and climb, and regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their health and well-being.
Ackie Monitors are grown dwelling monitors meaning they are a terrestrial species. However they do climb and would enjoy a large and tall enclosure. They are not like some of the smaller tree monitors and prefer to hide in rocks, leaves and dirt.
Ackie monitors require a basking spot of around 120-140°F and a cooler side of 80-90°F in their enclosure. It is crucial to maintain these temperature gradients to mimic their natural habitat and promote proper digestion and overall health.
UVB lighting is essential for Ackie monitors to properly metabolize calcium and prevent metabolic bone disease. Providing a UVB light source for 10-12 hours a day will help ensure their long-term health and well-being.
Ackie monitors should be fed a varied diet consisting of insects, such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms, as well as occasional small rodents. It is important to dust their food with calcium +D3 and other supplements to ensure they are receiving proper nutrition.
Ackie monitors should be handled with care and only when necessary to avoid stress. It is best to allow them to acclimate to their new environment before attempting to handle them. Ackie monitors can be tame but you should take care not to handle during shedding times or when your monitor has just eaten.
