The San Francisco garter snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis Tetrataenia, is a small and brightly coloured gater snake originating in San Francisco and is considered one of the most beautiful snakes in North America. These snakes require a habitat with plenty of space to roam and explore, as well as adequate hiding spots.
These snakes are classed as endangered meaning it is crucial to ensure they are not taken from the wild and that captive breeding programs are supported to help increase their population. As a result, owning the San Francisco garter snake is exceptionally rare, emphasizing the responsibility and commitment required for their care. Garter snakes are intriguing to observe and can exhibit swift movements, showcasing their active nature despite their friendly disposition.
Garter snakes require supplemental heating from an external source like a heat lamp or ceramic heater to maintain their optimal body temperature. Ambient temperature should be kept between 21-26 degrees Celsius (75-85°F) to ensure their health and well-being. Additionally, providing hiding spots and branches for climbing can help mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress. It’s essential to maintain a basking temperature range of 30–32 degrees Celsius (86-90°F) to enable garter snakes to effectively regulate their body temperature.
Providing UVB light is crucial for garter snakes as it supports their calcium metabolism and overall health, benefiting them similarly to other reptiles.
Although garter snakes can be housed together, it’s vital to house them with individuals of the same species, and care should be taken when housing males and females together to avoid unintended breeding.
Garter snakes have a mixed diet in the wild, consuming prey such as fish, amphibians, insects, and earthworms. In captivity, however, many owners choose to feed their garter snakes a diet consisting primarily of rodents.
