The Florida ivory millipede, scientifically known as Chicobolus spinigerus, is a captivating species native to the Southeast United States. They are relatively easy to care for, requiring a humid environment and a diet of decaying plant matter. They are recognised for their vibrant colouration and distinctive defensive behaviour of curling into a tight spiral when faced with threats.
For optimal care, house the Florida ivory millipede in a terrarium with moist substrate like coconut fibre or peat moss to regulate humidity levels effectively. It is important to provide hiding spots and areas for burrowing to mimic their natural habitat. A tank size of at least 10 gallons is necessary to provide sufficient space for the millipede to move around and explore comfortably. You can achieve this by using either a plastic or glass tank for housing the millipede.
Maintain ambient temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit for the Florida Ivory Millipede, ensuring it is shielded from direct sunlight to avoid overheating. A thermostatically controlled heat mat mounted to the enclosure’s side can provide this. Take care not to mount a heat mat below as this can overheat your pet millipedes. The ideal humidity for this species is around 70-80%, which can be achieved by misting the tank daily and providing a substrate that retains moisture well, such as coconut fibre or peat moss.
Florida Ivory Millipedes feed on a diet of decaying plant matter, such as leaf litter and rotting wood. Ensuring a variety of food sources is crucial to guarantee they obtain all essential nutrients for their health and well-being. Additionally, offering calcium supplements occasionally can help support their exoskeleton development.
