Caring for your Lutino Kakariki
Accessories: Kakarikis are extremely intelligent animals and enjoy a high amount of stimulation. Toys should be provided for enrichment which enable the bird to remain occupied. Allow plenty of perches to climb on and swing toys. There is a wide range of wood and plants which create a natural environment for your pet.
Diet: A high quality parakeet food . Pellets should make up no more than 25% of the diet. Feed seed, soft and fresh foods.
Housing: A large indoor or large outdoor enclosure. Can be tamed to sit on freestanding perch over time. Outdoor enclosures should have enough space to fly freely. Aviary’s are suitable along with suspended cages with a minimum length of 1.5 meters. Fly cage also required or time out of the cage with interaction.
Handling: Kakarikis can be fast reacting birds, however with the correct training, they will bond with their owner. When taming your bird, set up space in your home to allow it to fly and place a perch in the middle of the room. Sit in the room with your bird over time it will be more used to you, and you can slowly approach and offer further treats. Over time your bird will learn to do this without treats.
