Male Blue Spiny Swift CB24
The blue spiny swift, also known as Sceloporus cyanogenys or the blue fence lizard, is a medium-sized terrestrial lizard that originates from Southern USA and Mexico.
Known for its vibrant blue colouration and distinctive spiny scales, the blue spiny swift is a popular species among reptile enthusiasts. Its agile nature allows it to swiftly navigate through trees and shrubs in search of insects and small prey.
For optimal care, it is recommended to house these active lizards in a terrestrial enclosure that is tall enough to accommodate climbing areas and designed with a forest-style habitat. These enclosures should also include plenty of branches and foliage for climbing and hiding. A bioactive enclosure is highly recommended for these fascinating lizards due to its ability to provide a natural and enriching environment.
Blue spiny swifts thrive on a diverse diet of insects, including crickets, mealworms, and roaches, which contributes to their ease of care in captivity. They require UVB and an external heat source such as a bulb or ceramic, as they receive high levels of UV and heat in the wild.
While Blue Spiny Swifts can be fast-moving, those bred by Blackpool Reptiles are accustomed to handling and can be safely interacted with. It is advisable to handle your Blue Spiny Swift within the enclosure until it becomes comfortable enough to perch on your hand. Once this bond is established, you can gently bring them out of the enclosure, ensuring the room is secure in case the lizard attempts to escape. In the event of needing to capture your lizard, avoid grabbing its tail, as Blue Spiny Swifts have the ability to detach them as a defence mechanism against predators. Although Blue Spiny Swifts can regenerate their tails, the regrown tail may have a different appearance compared to the original one.
