Royal pythons are known for their curious and calm temperament. Adult royal pythons typically grow to 4-5 ft in length, with males being slightly smaller at 3-4 ft. They are also known as ball pythons due to their tendency to curl up into a tight ball when they feel threatened or stressed, resembling a ball.
Royal pythons are cold-blooded and ‘ectothermic.’ This means they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. In captivity, you can provide a basking lamp, ceramic or heat mat.
While they often curl up, royal pythons still appreciate a spacious enclosure for exploration. They like having branches and climbing opportunities.
When purchasing a baby or young snake from Blackpool Reptiles, it’s crucial to choose the right enclosure. This provides a secure and comfortable environment for their growth and development. Excessively large spaces can lead to insecurity in your snake. This may result in feeding problems and stress. For young snakes, it’s best to start with a smaller enclosure. Increase the enclosure size as your snake grows. If you are buying a large vivarium, you should also purchase a faunarium or small plastic tank. Placing the snake in a smaller tank before feeding can help them feel more secure.
At Blackpool Reptiles, we have a range of appropriate housing for sale for baby royal pythons up to adult royal pythons. We breed a large amount of pythons in-house. We purchase others externally from breeders. They all feed on defrosted mice or rats.
Royal pythons are excellent starter snakes for beginners, thanks to their docile nature and adaptability; regular handling helps them become tame and comfortable.
Adult royal pythons typically reach lengths of approximately 145-150 cm and weigh around 1500-3000 g, making them relatively small pets compared to many other commonly kept animals. Females grow bigger than males. Female royal pythons have higher nutritional needs than males due to the energy requirements for egg production and laying. You can keep males smaller as they do not need to go through this process.
