This species of chameleon is native to East Africa, specifically Kenya and Tanzania. The Yellow-crested Jackson’s chameleon is known for its vibrant yellow coloration and distinctive three horns on its head. It is a medium to large sized chameleon reaching around 18-25cm as adults.

Caring for your Chameleon

Yellow-crested Jackson’s chameleons require a spacious enclosure with plenty of climbing branches and live plants to mimic their natural habitat. It is important to provide proper UVB lighting to ensure their health and well-being. UVB works alongside calcium + D3 (offered sprinkled on food) and allows the chameleon to metabolise the nutrients it needs. Lack of the correct calcium and nutrients along with insufficient UVB lighting can lead to serious health issues, such as metabolic bone disease. This affects the chameleon’s bones and can cause disabilities such as lack of grip, bent tail and back bones, and incorrectly growing limbs.

It is crucial to maintain a basking temperature of around 80-85°F for Jackson’s chameleons to properly regulate their body temperature. Additionally, providing a gradient of temperatures within the enclosure will allow them to thermoregulate effectively. The ambient air temperature should be 72-76°F. Overheating, Jackson’s chameleons can cause severe dehydration very quickly, so it is important to check they are receiving the correct parameters.

Depending on the time of day, Jackson’s chameleons require humidity of 50-100%. If you measure your humidity and it is too low or too high, you should spray or mist your enclosure more or less. If you are housing your chameleon in a bioactive tank, this can hugely help with humidity and also provides lasting drinking places for your pet.

Jackson’s chameleons are not typically known to enjoy handling and can become stressed if handled too frequently. It is best to limit handling to necessary situations, such as for health checks or enclosure maintenance.
