General Information: Rabbits Foot Ferns are known for their unique fuzzy rhizomes that resemble a rabbit’s foot, hence the name. They are non-toxic to pets and can be a great addition to any indoor space with their lush, green foliage.
The Rabbits Foot fern is so called because of its furry rhizomes that snake over the surface of the soil. In nature it grows as an epiphyte, with the rhizomes attaching it firmly to a rock or branch. In the terrarium it will need some support until the rhizomes have attached. If you want to grow this species terrestrially then provide a moist, rich soil that does not dry out. Rabbit Foot Ferns dislike bright light and are easily scorched so they must be positioned carefully to look their best.
Apart from the aesthetic appeal of a planted terrarium there are some very real, tangible benefits for the animals. Living plants provide natural cover and climbing perches, shade, basking sites and maintain natural humidity. Just as live plants in an office can improve workers well-being, live plants in a terrarium will have the same effect for animals.
These plants are not just small houseplants but are a selected range of species that are ideally suited to the terrarium, including some of the more unusual or rare types.
