Rainbow Budgie CB24

Docile, gentle and intelligent birds, some are able to communicate better than parrots. Make great pets and are easy to tame.

Caring for your Budgie

Accessories: Budgies enjoy stimulation, so provide several types of toys and mirrors. Regularly change toys as budgies will get bored easily. Budgies love bells! Budgies also adore baths, so provide a bath and suitable bathing sand. Provide fresh fruit and nuts as enrichment for your pet.

Diet: Feed budgies a diet consisting mostly of pellets and complete budgie foods. This will make up between 60-80% of their diet. Include 20-40% of fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and other treats in the diet. Budgies require a mixed diet to remain healthy.

Housing: Keep budgies in a suitable cage with a recommended minimum enclosure size of 60cm L x 45cm H x 45cm D or (L 2x wingspan, D/H 1.5x wingspan) for a single bird.  Cages should include food and water dishes, enrichment accessories (toys of different sizes, materials and textures), Perches, Dust bath and health care supplements.

Health: Common ailments in pet budgies range from respiratory infections to nutritional deficiencies. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are crucial in preventing many health problems in budgies. Signs of illness in budgies include sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nostrils, and changes in behaviour. If you find your bird sitting on the floor of the cage, panting, or exhibiting any abnormal behaviour, it should be checked by a vet.

Nails: Regular nail trims are important for budgies to prevent overgrowth and potential injury. Trimming nails every 4-6 weeks can help maintain your bird’s comfort and mobility. Add a sanded perch to the cage to keep nails naturally filed.

Feathers: Regular preening and bathing are essential for budgies to maintain healthy feathers. Providing a shallow dish of water for bathing and toys for preening can help keep their feathers in good condition. Avoid using aerosol sprays or other products that can damage their delicate plumage.

Beak: A healthy beak is crucial for a budgie’s ability to eat, climb, and play. Providing mineral blocks or cuttlebones can help keep their beak trimmed and healthy. If you notice any abnormalities in the beak, such as overgrowth or discolouration, consult a vet for proper care.

Handling your Budgie

When handling, handle budgies slowly as they are tame birds. We recommend taking your time with your new pet. For instance, talk softly to the bird and offer it treats to show it that you are not there to harm it. Over time your budgie should jump on to your hand– make sure the windows and doors are closed. Never pick your budgie up from above or grab it which can cause stress. Handling your bird daily will help it understand handling times.
