Mossy Frogs, also known as Theloderma corticale, are a species of frog native to Vietnam and southern China. They are known for their amazing ability to camouflage to their surroundings and resemble the moss and rainforests that they inhabit. Mossy frogs are brown and black as a base colour with raised green and brown spots that resemble moss growth.
Mossy frogs require a semi-aquatic arboreal enclosure, as they spend part of their time in water, hiding under rocks. Water must be dechlorinated using reptisafe or water conditioner to remove the chlorine. Frogs breathe through their skin, making it crucial to avoid chemicals like chlorine, as they can irritate their skin and lead to severe health issues or death.
You can dechlorinate tap water by leaving it in a watering can or bottle with the lid off for 24-48 hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate when exposed to air. Water should be provided in a large bowl and must be changed regularly to prevent the frogs from sitting in contaminated water.
A bioactive enclosure is highly recommended for mossy frogs as it replicates their natural habitat, offering essential enrichment for their physical and mental well-being. This setup enhances the well-being of your frog and simplifies the maintenance of your pet, making it easier for you to care for them. Bioactive custodians like isopods play a crucial role in recycling your pet’s waste, maintaining cleanliness, and balancing the habitat for your mossy frogs. Moreover, isopods aid in breaking down organic matter and preventing mould growth in the enclosure, contributing to a healthier environment for the mossy frogs.
Besides providing enrichment, a bioactive tank enhances the visual appeal of your pet’s habitat, creating a more attractive and engaging environment for both you and your pet Mossy Frog.
Mossy frogs feed on a diet that includes crickets, locusts, mealworms, cockroaches, and earthworms as suitable food options. Live food should be dusted with calcium and +D3 supplements 1-2 times a week.
Mossy frogs spend most of their time hiding from bright light, so UVB can be provided; however, several hiding places should be provided. Low UVB, such as plant lighting and natural UVB, allows your pet mossy frog to see what time of day it is without harming them from too much UVB exposure.
Vietnamese Mossy Frogs prefer cooler temperatures and can withstand as low as 50°f however, in captivity, they should be kept at temperatures of around 72°F-76°F and should not be exposed to 80°f or above. Temperatures must be kept below 80°F, as exposure to higher temperatures can cause death.
