Breeding Projects
Santa Isabel Dart Frogs
We have been breeding frogs for around 4 years, mainly pacman (horned frogs); however, we have recently been working with Santa Isabel dart frogs.
Not only is Santa Isabel a stunning species to look at, but they also have an incredible call that sounds like an insect calling. Male Santa Isabel dart frogs frequently vocalise their distinct call during the breeding season as part of their courtship display to attract potential mates. The fact that such a tiny creature can produce such an incredible sound is truly astonishing.
Santa Isabel dart frogs (Epipedobates anthonyi ‘Santa Isabel’) are medium-sized dart frogs that originate in the Santa Isabel region of Ecuador. They are known for their unique features. Blackpool Reptiles Santa Isabel Poison Dart Frogs are beautiful little CB24 frogs that are brown and orange in base colour with bright green, white, and yellow stripes. They are active during the day and have a call that you will be sure to hear during mating season. These frogs have vibrant colours and unique patterns, making them a popular choice among frog enthusiasts.

Caring for Santa Isabel Dart Frogs
These stunning frogs enjoy a rain forest environment, ideally a bio-active kit with live moss and a mix of natural products such as leaf litter, live plants, and cork bark. Some keepers combine similar species of poison dart frog in small groups. (Please contact us before mixing different species as not all should be mixed) .They use a bio set up with custodians (clean up crew), which maintain the environment naturally by feeding on the frogs’ waste. The frogs are typically fed fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and springtails and are keen feeders so should be fed regularly to ensure their health and well-being. Additionally, it is crucial to provide correct lighting and calcium +D3 to keep their bones strong and prevent metabolic bone disease. Proper humidity levels should be provided to mimic their natural habitat and ensure their skin is healthy.
Poison dart frogs generally live on the forest floors of hot and humid countries, which means they require a cooler temperature than you may think. In captivity, they enjoy temperatures of 21–26 degrees Celsius (70–80 degrees Fahrenheit). Avoid keeping these frogs at high temperatures for an extended period, as it can lead to heat stress, which is fatal for them. Dart frogs should be provided with low-level UVB light to maintain the health of their bones and skin.
Avoid using tap water for your frog to prevent skin irritation. Instead, opt for dechlorinated water by letting tap water sit uncovered for 24 to 48 hours, using chlorine-free bottled water, or utilising a water dechlorinator like Reptisafe to ensure the water is safe for your frog’s skin.
Waterfalls and misters are a fine addition to a dart frog tank. Dart frogs sit by the waterfall, feeding daily. LED lighting can improve the appearance of your tank and is a must in a display tank. You can also purchase terrarium fans, which prevent the glass in your tank from fogging up.
