HANDLING YOUR BUDGIE
Budgies are tame birds which can be handled, however we recommend doing this slowly with your new pet. Although it may be a slow process, you should never rush the bonding period with your pet budgie as this could damage the relationship. Your budgie must come to you of their own choice.
Speak softly to your pet bird. Place the cage at head height and against a wall if possible to make the bird feel more secure. Move gently towards your birds cage and move your arm slowly towards it whilst speaking softly.
Use treats to strengthen your bond and once your pet bird takes treats from you, then you can start to consider handling it.
Over time with repeating the above steps, your budgie should jump on to your hand– make sure the windows and doors are closed. Never pick your budgie up from above or grab it which can cause stress. Handling on a daily routine will help your bird to understand handling times.

Common ailments in pet budgies range from respiratory infections to nutritional deficiencies. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are crucial in preventing many health problems in budgies.
Signs of illness in budgies include sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nostrils, and changes in behaviour. If you find your bird sitting on the floor of the cage, panting, or exhibiting any abnormal behaviour, it should be checked by a vet.
Nails: Regular nail trims are important for budgies to prevent overgrowth and potential injury. Trimming nails every 4-6 weeks can help maintain your bird’s comfort and mobility. Add a sanded perch to the cage to keep nails naturally filed.
Feathers: Regular preening and bathing are essential for budgies to maintain healthy feathers. Providing a shallow dish of water for bathing and toys for preening can help keep their feathers in good condition. Avoid using aerosol sprays or other products that can damage their delicate plumage.
Beak: A healthy beak is crucial for a budgie’s ability to eat, climb, and play. Providing mineral blocks or cuttlebones can help keep their beak trimmed and healthy. If you notice any abnormalities in the beak, such as overgrowth or discolouration, consult a vet for proper care.
