Crested Geckos are crepuscular geckos from New Caledonia. They are found in the rainforest and are extremely active during the dusk and dawn hours but will sleep for many hours during the day.
Crested Geckos are cold blooded and are known as ‘exothermic’—meaning’that they need heat from an outside source in order to maintain their body temperature.
Blackpool Reptiles stock a variety of morphs and ages of Crested Gecko, we breed most of these in-house to provide our customers with the highest quality reptile and amphibian pets.
It is essential to provide Crested Geckos with an arboreal enclosure to mimic their natural habitat and allow them ample space for exercise. They enjoy climbing and jumping. Crested geckos can thrive in a bio-active terrarium that mirrors their natural habitat, promoting a healthier and more stimulating environment.
Crested Geckos live in a place with high humidity and so must be sprayed 2-3 times a day to keep the correct levels in the enclosure, we advise the use of a hygrometer.
Crested Geckos thrive in an arboreal environment with ample space for jumping, exhibiting their nocturnal behavior by being most active at night. Some crested geckos will be active during the day but as they are nocturnal, the majority come out at night and can be seen wide eyed and at their brightest colours enjoying the terrarium. Crested geckos do best in a glass tank as they have a wet environment, so wood often warps from the humidity.
There are many substrates available for crested geckos, almost all being soil or natural fibre based. Selecting the substrate for your crested gecko is a matter of personal preference; feel free to experiment by mixing different substrates to create the ideal environment for your gecko.
Consider using either plastic plants or live plants to enhance the aesthetics and environmental enrichment of the crested gecko’s enclosure. It is crucial to provide Crested Geckos with UVB lighting to meet their physiological requirements and maintain their health. Although they are nocturnal, they do have access to sunlight in the wild and so we do recommend a UVB source. Heating is optional and depends on the temperature of your house, however, preferably some heat should be offered in the colder seasons.
It is important to turn off lighting at night, and any heating which is used, so that your gecko can understand the natural light cycle and act accordingly. Crested Geckos are naturally adapted to cooler temperatures, so individuals in warmer environments may not need supplemental heating. In case you are unable to maintain the recommended temperatures, consider consulting with us to explore options for adding additional heating to the enclosure if the kit you choose does not come with this or if you are upgrading your existing tank.
