Tortoises are calm natured animals who enjoy affection and make the perfect pet, given the ideal home. They can live up to 150 years- dependent on species and grow to a variety of sizes.

The Spur Thighed Tortoise (Testudo graeca) originates in North Africa and Southern Europe. They are a small Spur Thighed Tortoise reaching around 8-10 inches in size when fully grown. They can live for over 75 years, so be prepared for a long commitment if you decide to get one as a pet.

Spur Thighed Tortoises require an enclosure with plenty of space to roam, bask, and burrow. We recommend at least a 3ft vivarium for a juvenile Spur Thighed Tortoise, needing a larger tank as it grows. As Spur Thighed Tortoises grow larger, the more space they will need to thrive.

Spur thighed tortoises are from regions like North Africa and Southern Europe with a higher level of heat and UVB than we see in the UK. Therefore, it is necessary to artificially create a warm and sunny environment for them to live in. To do this, we use a heat lamp or ceramic lamp as a heat source and a linear UVB fluorescent tube to provide the necessary UVB rays for their health.

Spur thighed tortoises have a mixed diet, unlike some tortoises that only feed on grasses and plants. The main part of their diet should be made up of a variety of dark leafy greens and vegetables. Treat foods like small invertebrates, fruits, and flowers should only be given occasionally as a supplement. Food should be dusted with a calcium and vitamin D3 supplement to ensure proper shell and bone development.

Spur Thighed Tortoises may enjoy some time in the garden in peak summer, but be sure to monitor them closely to prevent overheating and check their temps regularly to ensure they are receiving enough heat.
