Gargoyle geckos are fascinating reptiles that are native to New Caledonia. They are part of a diverse group of geckos that includes the popular Crested Gecko and the giant Leachie Gecko. Gargoyle geckos are a medium-sized arboreal forest lizard reaching around 8 inches (from snout to tail) and can live for 15-20 years with the correct care.

Gargoyle Geckos, like many gecko species, have the ability to change colour dramatically depending on their mood, temperature, and the time of day. You may often notice that the colour of your gecko changes over time, resembling the colours it would have in the wild. The ability of changing colour allows them to protect themselves from predators or attract mates.

Gargoyle geckos were once rare and hard to come by animals that are now more readily available on the market. Gargoyle geckos display a diverse array of colours and patterns, including vibrant metallic silvers, rich reds, bright yellows, subtle greys, and other captivating hues. Their intricate patterns and striking coloration make them visually appealing reptiles. The large number of small scales they possess contribute to their shiny appearance and color depth.

Gargoyle geckos can be housed individually or in groups, typically comprising one male with multiple females. Understanding their social dynamics is crucial for creating a harmonious living environment for these reptiles. Male gargoyle geckos will fight so they should not be kept together. Adult Gargoyle geckos thrive in spacious enclosures that allow for ample jumping and exploration opportunities. A large terrarium with vertical space for climbing and horizontal space for movement is ideal for accommodating their arboreal nature. They are stunning in a display tank. Ensuring that the enclosures for juvenile Gargoyle geckos are appropriately sized is essential for facilitating their ability to locate food and regulate their body temperatures effectively. Providing a well-suited habitat is crucial for the health and well-being of young geckos.  Gargoyle geckos thrive in temperatures ranging from 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, as it mimics their natural habitat conditions. Additionally, they require UVB exposure and dietary supplementation with D3 to support their calcium metabolism and overall well-being. These can be provided via a Calcium +D3 supplement.

While Gargoyle geckos can be handled, it’s important to note that they are agile and may exhibit jumping behaviour when being held. Understanding their tendencies and behaviour during handling can help owners create a safe and comfortable interaction with their geckos. Once purchased they should be left to settle in their environment for at least a week. Once feeding well handling can take place. Baby Gargoyles are more jumpy than adults so care should be taken when handling. It is crucial to never grab a Gargoyle gecko’s tail as they have the ability to voluntarily detach their tails as a defense mechanism against predators. Respecting this behaviour is essential to maintain the well-being and health of these unique reptiles. They do grow back but this can take time.
