Tortoise are one of the more popular reptile pets

Tortoise housing

There are table and vivarium set-up kits and depending on which species you choose to keep one may be better suited than the other. Please contact us to discuss the requirements of your pet tortoise.

Tortoise Foods

There is a range of dry tortoise foods and formulas to choose from. They should be fed alongside your tortoises natural diet which is usually mostly rough greens or hay depending on the species. Tortoises require a high quality diet, watery items such as tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber should be fed sparingly to suitable species.

Lighting products

There are many lighting products available and it is important to know which are suitable for your tortoise. Mercury vapour bulbs can be used to provide dual heat and UVB however they are not suitable for use with a thermostat. UVB can be offered in a selection of tubes, compact UVB is not suitable for tortoises as it does not provide the correct surface area of light that they need.

Heating products

There are many heating products available and it is important to know which are suitable for your tortoise. Tortoises require heat in the form of a bulb or ceramic. Mats and cables can be used to provide additional heat during the colder months but should not be used as the main heat source. Heat mats should only be used in kits that have a built in area for them.

Tortoise Healthcare

Tortoises require Calcium +D3 supplement which keeps their bones and shell strong. This can be added to their food several times a week and works alongside their UVB to keep your pet tortoise healthy.

There are also vitamins, critical care treatments and other additives which are beneficial for your pet.

Healthcare products are available which can be used to treat scrapes and minor injuries and things like tortoise blocks which aid in keeping your tortoises beak in shape.

Bowls & Dishes

Tortoises require a large water bowl so that they can soak in it if they choose. Tortoises are able to absorb water through the cloaca to aid in hydration. During a soak, your tortoise will likely use that time to go to the bathroom so the bowl should be flat enough for the tortoise to get in and out of but deep enough for it to sit in. Ramps and slate can be used to provide access if required.

Food dishes should also be shallow so that they are able to reach their food without having to try and get into the bowl to eat.

Caves & Hides

Whilst some think that a tortoises shell is its home, in reality tortoises hide and dig down at night below the surface in order to keep themselves safe. Providing multiple hides for your tortoise provides enrichment and allows your tortoise to feel secure. We recommend using hides on the hot and cold side of your tortoises enclosure.
